America's First National Park — 10,000 Geothermal Wonders & America's Serengeti
About This Guide
Yellowstone sits on a supervolcano caldera and contains over 10,000 geothermal features — more than any other place on Earth. Old Faithful erupts with clockwork regularity. Grand Prismatic Spring blazes in electric blues and oranges. The Lamar Valley offers the best wildlife viewing in North America — wolves, bears, bison, and pronghorn in vast grasslands that earned it the 'American Serengeti' nickname.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
Old Faithful erupts every 44–125 minutes (average 90 min). The Upper Geyser Basin has the world's densest concentration of geysers — Morning Glory Pool, Castle Geyser.
Yellowstone's largest hot spring (112 m wide) glows in extraordinary rainbow colours — from deep blue in the centre to bright orange and red at the edges.
The American Serengeti — open valleys where bison graze by the thousands, wolves hunt elk at dawn, and grizzly bears roam freely. Best at sunrise and sunset.
The Yellowstone River drops 94 m at the Lower Falls into a 400 m deep canyon of yellow and orange rhyolite. Artist Point has the classic view.

Insider Knowledge
Book Old Faithful Inn 6–12 months ahead — the most iconic hotel in any US national park
Lamar Valley: Arrive before sunrise with a spotting scope for wolves
Grand Prismatic: The overlook trail gives the aerial view — the boardwalk is too close
Never leave boardwalks at thermal features — ground can be dangerously thin
Timed entry reservations may be required in peak season — check nps.gov before arriving
July–August: The most crowded months; traffic jams at wildlife sightings are common
Combine with Grand Teton — same park pass covers both
Bozeman, Montana is the best value airport/base for Yellowstone
Practical Information
Fly to Jackson Hole (JAC), Bozeman (BZN), or Cody (COD). Rent a car — no public transport in the park. Book accommodation inside the park months ahead.
Stay 100 yards from bears and wolves, 25 yards from bison. Bison gore more visitors than bears annually — they're deceptively fast. Never approach any animal.
Combine with Grand Teton National Park (30 min south) for one of America's greatest double-park itineraries. Jackson Hole is the best base for both.
Old Faithful Inn (a National Historic Landmark) is extraordinary — book 6–12 months ahead. Canyon Village and Mammoth Hot Springs also have dining options.
$35 vehicle entry, or $80 America the Beautiful Annual Pass for all federal lands — pays for itself quickly if visiting multiple parks.
Park sits at 2,000–3,000 m. Thermal features: Never leave boardwalks — the crust can be paper thin over boiling acidic water. People have died breaking this rule.
