Practical Information
Three airports (DCA closest). Excellent Metro system covers all major sights. Most attractions on the Mall are walkable from each other.
All Smithsonian museums, all National Mall monuments, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, and many other major attractions are completely free.
Capitol building tours require advance booking through your congressman's office (US citizens) or pre-registration. White House public tours limited and complex to arrange.
DC has a serious restaurant scene — Ethiopian food (largest Ethiopian diaspora outside Africa), the H Street corridor, Georgetown waterfront, and Union Market food hall.
DC is one of America's best-value cities for a cultural trip — almost everything is free. Budget mainly for food, accommodation, and Uber.
Late March–early April cherry blossom season around the Tidal Basin is one of America's great annual spectacles. Book accommodation 6+ months ahead.
