The Mighty Five — America's Greatest Concentration of National Parks
About This Guide
Utah contains five of America's most spectacular national parks — Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Canyonlands, and Arches — within a 500-km loop. Combine this with Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend and Utah offers the greatest concentration of jaw-dropping scenery anywhere in North America.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
The Virgin River carved this extraordinary red canyon. Angels Landing (chains hike, permit required), The Narrows wading hike, and Emerald Pools are world-class.
Not a canyon but an amphitheatre of hoodoos — orange limestone spires eroded into bizarre shapes. Sunrise from Bryce Point turns them gold.
Over 2,000 natural sandstone arches including Delicate Arch (Utah's icon) and Landscape Arch (the world's longest natural arch). Timed entry now required.
The slot canyon near Page, Arizona glows with shafts of light at midday — Navajo Nation land (guided tours only). Horseshoe Bend's 270° river bend is a 1.5-mile walk from the car park.

Insider Knowledge
Angels Landing permit: Apply for the lottery on recreation.gov — check monthly
Arches timed entry: Book 3 months ahead on recreation.gov — fills immediately
Antelope Canyon: Upper canyon for photographers, lower for hikers; tours sell out
The Narrows: Best May–June after snowmelt. Avoid after heavy rain — flash flood danger
America the Beautiful Pass ($80): Covers all 5 Utah national parks — buy it first
Moab accommodation: Book months ahead for spring/fall — the town fills completely
Drive Scenic Byway 12 between Bryce and Capitol Reef — one of America's best roads
Bryce Canyon: Rim trail at sunset, then stay for extraordinary dark sky stargazing
Practical Information
Fly to Las Vegas (LAS) or Salt Lake City (SLC). Rent a car — absolutely essential. The Mighty Five loop from Las Vegas is 7–10 days. From SLC is equally good.
Angels Landing lottery permit required. Arches timed entry reservation required May–October. Antelope Canyon tour-only booking. Book 3–6 months ahead.
Ideal order from Las Vegas: Zion → Bryce → Capitol Reef → Canyonlands → Arches (Moab). Return via Monument Valley and Page for Antelope Canyon.
Moab (gateway to Arches and Canyonlands) has the best restaurant and accommodation scene. Springdale (Zion gateway) is charming and walkable.
$35 per park or $80 America the Beautiful pass (buy it — pays for itself after 2 parks). Accommodation in Moab and Springdale gets expensive in peak season.
Utah desert in June–August can exceed 45°C at canyon floor level. Carry 4+ litres of water per person per day. The Narrows and Angels Landing are dangerous in summer heat.
