About This Guide

Your Complete North America Travel Companion

Oahu is the most visited Hawaiian island — home to the capital Honolulu, the iconic Waikiki Beach, and the solemn Pearl Harbor memorial. But beyond the tourist strip, Oahu has world-class surf (Pipeline, Sunset Beach on the North Shore), the dramatic Pali Lookout, the lush Manoa Valley, and the authentic local culture of Kailua town.

Inside the Guide

Must-Visit Destinations

Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.

Waikiki & Diamond Head

Waikiki & Diamond Head

The iconic beach backed by Honolulu hotels. Diamond Head crater hike (book in advance) for the best views over Waikiki. Surf lessons for beginners on the gentle waves.

Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor

USS Arizona Memorial (free, book early) sits directly above the sunken battleship. The Battleship Missouri, Pacific Aviation Museum, and the Bowfin submarine complete the day.

North Shore

North Shore

Winter (November–February) brings 9-metre waves for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing at Pipeline and Sunset Beach. Summer brings calm snorkelling waters at Shark's Cove.

Kailua & Windward Coast

Kailua & Windward Coast

Oahu's most beautiful beach town — Kailua Beach for kayaking to Mokulua Islands, Lanikai's calm turquoise water, and the lush Ko'olau mountain range backdrop.

Insider Knowledge

Pro Tips from Experts

01

USS Arizona Memorial: Book free passes the moment they open (60 days ahead)

02

Diamond Head: Book the trail reservation online — limited daily entry

03

North Shore: November–February brings big waves — Pipeline is spectacular from the beach

04

Kailua is far nicer than Waikiki for actually living the Hawaii experience

05

Poke bowls: Buy from a grocery store (Times, Foodland) not a tourist restaurant — much better value

06

Waikiki is the tourist centre — escape it as quickly as possible for real Hawaii

07

Sunrise and sunset timing: Check daily — varies seasonally

08

Hanauma Bay snorkelling: Book ahead, eco-certification required, no sunscreen (reef-safe only)

Practical Information

Everything You Need to Know

Getting Around

Honolulu International (HNL). Rent a car for the North Shore and windward coast — essential. TheBus public transit covers central Oahu.

Pearl Harbor

USS Arizona Memorial: Reserve free passes 60 days ahead online — they disappear instantly. Allow a full day for all the museums.

Hawaiian Culture

Respect the land and ocean — Hawaii has a deep conservation culture. Don't touch coral. Remove shoes when entering homes. Learn 'Mahalo' (thank you).

Local Food

Plate lunch (rice + mac salad + protein), poke bowls (far better and cheaper than mainland), shave ice, malasadas from Leonard's Bakery, Loco Moco.

Costs

Hawaii is expensive — most things cost 20–30% more than the mainland. Cook at home when possible. Farmers markets are great value.

Ocean Safety

Hawaiian waves can be deadly for inexperienced swimmers. Obey warning flags. The North Shore winter surf is for spectating only — not swimming.
