North America's French Heart — Poutine, Jazz & Joie de Vivre
About This Guide
Montréal is North America's most European city — an island city that seamlessly blends French and English cultures with vibrant arts, extraordinary food, and a festival calendar unmatched anywhere on the continent. The Jazz Festival, Just for Laughs Comedy, Osheaga Music Festival, and the Montréal International Fireworks Festival all happen in summer. The underground city (RÉSO) makes winter utterly survivable.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
Cobblestone streets, the magnificent Notre-Dame Basilica (1829), Place Jacques-Cartier street performers, the Old Port with its waterfront terraces, and the Pointe-à-Callière archaeology museum.
Frederick Law Olmsted designed this 190-hectare park above the city. Beaver Lake, the lookout over the skyline, Tam-Tams Sunday drum circle, and cycling and cross-country skiing.
Montréal's bohemian heart — colourful Victorian duplexes with external staircases, the Main (Boulevard Saint-Laurent), bagels from Fairmount or St-Viateur, and the best cafés.
Two magnificent covered food markets — extraordinary Québec produce, maple products, fresh cheese curds, charcuterie, and local vegetables. Jean-Talon is North America's finest.

Insider Knowledge
Say 'Bonjour' first — always. In shops, in restaurants, everywhere.
Schwartz's smoked meat: Queue is always long, moves fast, totally worth it
Bagels: The Montréal bagel debate (Fairmount vs St-Viateur) is unresolvable — try both
Jazz Festival: Most outdoor concerts are free — the ticketed shows are smaller venues
Winter (December–March): Dress in layers, use the RÉSO underground city, embrace it
STM metro night buses run when the metro is closed — night owls covered
Plateau neighbourhood is best explored on a Bixi bike
Poutine: La Banquise (24-hour diner) for the most varieties
Practical Information
Montréal-Trudeau Airport Metro to city (30 min). Excellent STM Métro network. Bixi bike share for the Plateau and Old Port. Underground RÉSO for winter.
Montréal's most stunning interior — Gothic Revival with extraordinary blue and gold decorations. Book the Aura light show for an evening experience.
Jazz Festival (late June), Just for Laughs (July), Osheaga (August), and the Francofolies music festival. All happen in a 10-week summer explosion of culture.
Poutine (fries + cheese curds + gravy — the original), Montréal smoked meat (Schwartz's Deli), bagels (thinner, denser, wood-oven baked), and world-class restaurants on St-Denis.
Very good value by North American standards. Poutine €8. Smoked meat sandwich €12. Metro day pass €11. Much cheaper than Toronto.
French is the official language — using 'Bonjour' first is not just politeness but expected. Montréalers will switch to English gracefully but appreciate the effort.
