About This Guide

Your Complete North America Travel Companion

Maui is Hawaii's most beloved island — a place of extraordinary diversity from the summit of Haleakalā volcano (3,055 m) to the pristine beaches of the west coast, the lush rainforests of the Road to Hana, and the whale nursery waters of the Au'au Channel (December–April). It's more relaxed and more beautiful than Oahu.

Insider Knowledge

Pro Tips from Experts

01

Haleakalā sunrise: Reserve 60 days ahead at 7am Hawaii time — sell out instantly

02

Road to Hana: Leave by 6:30am — traffic becomes gridlocked after 9am

03

Wai'anapanapa: Book the separate state park reservation (not free)

04

Car rental: Book 4–6 months ahead — Maui is chronically short of rental cars

05

Lahaina: Devastated by 2023 wildfire — check current status before visiting

06

Whale watching: December–February are best months; January is peak

07

Molokini snorkel tour: Morning tours have calmer seas and better visibility

08

South Maui (Kihei) is better value than west Maui (Ka'anapali) for accommodation

Practical Information

Everything You Need to Know

Getting There

Fly to OGG (Kahului). Rent a car — absolutely essential. No public transport for Hana or Haleakalā. Book rental early as demand is extreme.

Haleakalā Sunrise

Timed entry reservation required 60 days ahead (opens at 7am HST). Drive up takes 2 hours from Kihei. Arrive 45 min before sunrise. It is cold (2°C) — pack layers.

Road to Hana

Start before 7am to beat traffic. Reserve Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach) in advance. Allow a full day — 4–5 hours each way minimum.

Maui Food

Ono Seafood poke, Tin Roof plate lunch, Mama's Fish House (book a month ahead), banana bread at Aunty Sandy's on the Road to Hana, shave ice everywhere.

Expensive Island

Maui is Hawaii's most expensive island. Car rental can be $80–150/day. Accommodation $200–500+/night in peak season. Cook in accommodation to save.

Water Safety

Maui has some of Hawaii's most dangerous ocean conditions — strong currents, rogue waves. South Maui beaches (Kihei, Wailea) are calmer. Always check conditions.
