About This Guide

Your Complete North America Travel Companion

The Grand Canyon is 446 km long, up to 29 km wide, and over 1.6 km deep — a geological timeline exposed by the Colorado River over five million years. The South Rim is accessible year-round; the North Rim is open only mid-May to mid-October. Rim-to-rim hiking is one of America's great adventures. Colorado River rafting through the inner canyon is a bucket-list experience.

Bright Angel Trail

The most popular inner canyon trail — drops 1,350 m to the Colorado River over 15 km (one way). Most day hikers go to Indian Garden (9.6 km) and back.

The turquoise waterfall paradise on the Havasupai Tribal land requires a 16-km hike from the trailhead. Permits sell out in seconds when released each February.

06

Rim shuttle is free — park the car and use it

Practical Information

Everything You Need to Know

Getting There

Fly to Las Vegas (LAS, 4 hrs drive) or Phoenix (PHX, 3.5 hrs drive). Flagstaff is the closest city (1.5 hrs). Shuttle from Flagstaff and Williams available.

Sunrise & Sunset

Mather Point and Yavapai Point for sunrise. Hopi Point and Pima Point for sunset (shuttle accessible). Desert View Watchtower for the full panorama.

Hiking Safety

Never attempt the river and back in one day in summer — this has killed many people. Descend in the morning, rest in shade at midday, ascend in late afternoon. Carry 4L of water.

Phantom Ranch

The only accommodation at the canyon bottom — book via lottery 15 months ahead. The steak dinner after a rim-to-rim hike is legendary.

Colorado Rafting

Commercial Colorado River rafting trips through the inner canyon take 7–18 days and cost $4,000–7,000. Book 1–2 years ahead. One of the world's great adventures.

Rim-to-Rim

South Rim to North Rim (or reverse): 34 km via North Kaibab Trail and Bright Angel Trail. Usually done in 3 days with a night at Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch.
