One Mile Deep, 277 Miles Long — America's Greatest Natural Wonder
About This Guide
The Grand Canyon is 446 km long, up to 29 km wide, and over 1.6 km deep — a geological timeline exposed by the Colorado River over five million years. The South Rim is accessible year-round; the North Rim is open only mid-May to mid-October. Rim-to-rim hiking is one of America's great adventures. Colorado River rafting through the inner canyon is a bucket-list experience.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
The most accessible rim with Mather Point, Bright Angel Trail, Desert View Watchtower, and the Grand Canyon Village historic district. Open year-round.
The most popular inner canyon trail — drops 1,350 m to the Colorado River over 15 km (one way). Most day hikers go to Indian Garden (9.6 km) and back.
More remote, 300 m higher, and far less visited. The drive from the South Rim is 354 km (or 21 km as the condor flies). Open mid-May to mid-October only.
The turquoise waterfall paradise on the Havasupai Tribal land requires a 16-km hike from the trailhead. Permits sell out in seconds when released each February.

The only accommodation at the canyon bottom — book via lottery 15 months ahead. The steak dinner after a rim-to-rim hike is legendary.
Commercial Colorado River rafting trips through the inner canyon take 7–18 days and cost $4,000–7,000. Book 1–2 years ahead. One of the world's great adventures.
