Cadillac Mountain
The highest peak on the US Atlantic coast (466 m). From October to March, it's the first place in the US to see sunrise. Timed vehicle entry reservation required in summer.
Park Loop Road & Thunder Hole
The 43-km scenic drive loops around the eastern half of the island past Sand Beach, Thunder Hole (a sea chasm that booms at high tide), and Otter Cliffs.
Jordan Pond & Carriage Roads
The pristine glacial pond with the classic view of the Bubbles mountains. 72 km of historic carriage roads (horse-drawn only) wind through the park's interior.
Bar Harbor
Charming coastal town with lobster shacks, whale watching tours, kayak rentals, the Abbe Museum of Native American culture, and an excellent farmers' market.

Getting There
Fly to Bangor (BGR, 1 hr drive) or Boston (BOS, 4.5 hrs drive). Rent a car — some areas accessible by Island Explorer free bus in summer.
Sunrise
Cadillac Mountain sunrise: Reserve timed vehicle entry in advance for summer. From October–March: First sunrise in the US — arrive 30 min before civil dawn.
Hiking
Precipice Trail (serious iron rungs route), Beehive Trail, Gorham Mountain, and Ocean Path (easy, spectacular views) cover all difficulty levels.
Lobster
Lobster rolls: Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bass Harbor or Beal's Lobster Pier in Southwest Harbor for the most authentic experience. Blueberry pie is mandatory.
Costs
$35 vehicle entry (America the Beautiful Pass covers it). Bar Harbor accommodation is expensive July–August — book months ahead.
Autumn Peak
Foliage peaks mid-October — the most beautiful time in all of Maine. Cool, clear days with spectacular colour. Also the most crowded — book early.
