Middle Earth — Mountains, Fjords & Adventure Capital
About This Guide
New Zealand is the adventure capital of the world — birthplace of commercial bungy jumping, the country that invented the modern backpacker culture, and home to some of Earth's most dramatic scenery. Nine Great Walks, two stunning islands, Māori culture, Middle-Earth landscapes, and the world's most extreme sports compressed into a country smaller than California.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
Adventure capital with bungy jumping (AJ Hackett invented it here), skiing, Milford Sound, Lake Wanaka, and the most dramatic mountain scenery in the southern hemisphere.
Milford Sound — 'the eighth wonder of the world'. Fiordland National Park (UNESCO) contains the most remote, rugged landscape in the country.
Geothermal wonders with geysers (Pohutu — largest active in the Southern Hemisphere), hot mud pools, Māori culture, Hobbiton movie set, and volcanic Tongariro National Park.
Golden beaches, turquoise water, coastal kayaking, and the Abel Tasman Coastal Track — New Zealand's most popular Great Walk.
