Fire, Ice & Northern Lights at the Edge of the World
About This Guide
Iceland is unlike anywhere else on Earth — a geologically young country of erupting volcanoes, retreating glaciers, explosive geysers, cascading waterfalls, and the ethereal Northern Lights. In summer, the midnight sun allows 24-hour exploration. In winter, the aurora borealis dances across the sky in colours that seem impossible.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
The world's most northerly capital (64°N). Colourful houses, Hallgrímskirkja church, excellent restaurants, lively bar scene, and gateway to all adventures.
Iceland's most famous route: Þingvellir National Park (where tectonic plates meet), Geysir hot spring area, and Gullfoss waterfall.
Black sand beaches at Reynisfjara, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls (you can walk behind the latter), Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.
Snæfellsjökull glacier volcano (Jules Verne set Journey to the Centre of the Earth here), dramatic lava fields, sea stacks, and seal beaches.

Aurora hunting: Drive away from Reykjavík to dark sky areas
Grocery shopping instead of eating out saves significant money
Practical Information
Rent a 4WD for the highland roads (F-roads). Ring Road (Route 1) circles the entire country — 1,332 km. No public transport in rural areas.
Best September–March away from Reykjavík light pollution. Download the Vedur app for aurora forecasts. Clear skies and high KP index needed.
June–August brings 24 hours of daylight. Great for photography but disruptive to sleep — bring eye masks. Hiking at 2 am is perfectly fine.
Skyr (thick yoghurt), lamb soup, Atlantic salmon, Arctic char, lobster bisque. Hotdogs from Bæjarins Beztu — Barack Obama's favourite.
One of Europe's most expensive countries. Self-catering saves money. Campervans popular. Budget $150–250/day minimum.
Weather changes violently and rapidly — check safetravel.is before every outing. Never walk on glaciers without a guide. F-roads need 4WD.
