Cascading Lakes, Medieval Walls & Adriatic Islands
About This Guide
Croatia has one of Europe's most beautiful coastlines — 1,800 km of Adriatic coast, 1,200 islands, medieval walled cities, and the extraordinary Plitvice Lakes National Park. Dubrovnik's walls (Game of Thrones' King's Landing) and Split's Diocletian's Palace are among Europe's finest Roman and medieval sites.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
UNESCO-listed cascade of 16 terraced turquoise lakes connected by waterfalls through karst limestone forest. The most beautiful freshwater landscape in Europe.
The 'Pearl of the Adriatic' — a perfectly preserved medieval walled city on a limestone cape. Walk the walls, swim from Banje beach, and explore the old town at dawn.
Roman Emperor Diocletian's 4th-century retirement palace is still inhabited 1,700 years later — apartments, restaurants, and bars fill the ancient spaces.
The sunniest island in the Adriatic — lavender fields, the medieval fortress, vibrant nightlife at Carpe Diem Beach, and beautiful swimming coves.

Practical Information
Fly to Dubrovnik, Split, or Zagreb. Ferries connect the coast and islands. Rent a car for Plitvice and Dalmatian hinterland.
Book entry online (sells out in summer). Early morning arrival essential. The upper lakes are less visited. Allow a full day.
Dubrovnik is overwhelmingly crowded July–August with cruise ships. Visit May, June, September, or October for a much better experience.
Dalmatian peka (lamb or octopus slow-cooked under embers), fresh Adriatic seafood, prstaci (date mussels — controversial), truffle pasta in Istria, and Plavac Mali wine.
Croatia is better value than Western Europe but rising fast. Avoid tourist restaurants on the main squares. Island hopping by ferry is affordable.
Jadrolinija ferry connects the islands. Hvar, Brač, Korčula, and Vis are all beautiful. Vis is the least commercialised.
