3,000 Years of History — Minoan Palaces, Wild Gorges & Blue Waters
About This Guide
Crete is Greece's largest island and one of the Mediterranean's most diverse destinations — a place of extraordinary history (the Minoans built Europe's first advanced civilisation here 4,000 years ago), dramatic gorges, secluded beaches, and some of the best food in Greece. Heraklion, Chania, and the wild western coast each have distinct characters.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
The Palace of Knossos (founded 2000 BC) is the legendary labyrinth of the Minotaur — Europe's oldest city. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses incomparable Minoan treasures.
Europe's longest gorge (18 km, 6 hrs descent) through the White Mountains. Ends at the pebble beach of Agia Roumeli for a boat to Chora Sfakion.
Venice-built harbour, a Venetian lighthouse, winding alleys of the old town, a covered market, and the most sophisticated food scene on the island.
Elafonisi's rose-pink sand lagoon and Balos's triple-bay turquoise waters are among the Mediterranean's most beautiful beaches. Both require effort to reach — worth it.

Insider Knowledge
Rent a car — western Crete's best beaches are inaccessible without one
Samaria Gorge: Start the first bus down (leaves Chania at 6:15am)
Knossos is controversial (Evans's reconstructions) but still extraordinary
Elafonisi: Arrive before 9am or after 5pm — gets overwhelmingly crowded in July–August
Chania old town is better than Heraklion for accommodation
Cretan olive oil: Buy from local producers — far superior to supermarket
Spinalonga: More powerful than Knossos for most visitors — allow half a day
Car hire: Book through a local agency in Chania — cheaper than international brands
Practical Information
Fly to Heraklion (HER) or Chania (CHQ). Rent a car — essential for western Crete's beaches. Good bus network (KTEL) between towns.
Allow 2–3 hours. Hire a guide — the reconstructed palace needs explanation. Go early to beat the heat and cruise ship crowds.
Book the early bus from Chania. The descent is 6 hrs — start by 7am. Ends at Agia Roumeli (boat to Sfakion included in most tour packages).
Dakos (barley rusk salad), kalitsounia (cheese pastries), snails, lamb with stamnagathi herbs, honey, and Cretan olive oil (among Greece's finest).
Crete is better value than the smaller islands. Western Crete (Chania area) is most scenic and worth the extra travel time from the airport.
Western Crete roads can be extremely narrow and steep. 4WD useful for remote beaches. E4 coastal path for serious hikers.
