Insider Knowledge

Pro Tips from Experts

01

Book 6–12 months ahead — top overwater villas sell out that far in advance

02

All-inclusive packages are much better value than paying per meal

03

Baa Atoll for manta rays: Visit May–November for Hanifaru Bay aggregations

04

Seaplane transfers are spectacular — worth it for the scenery

05

South Ari Atoll for whale sharks — year-round sightings

06

Local guest houses on inhabited islands are 10x cheaper than resorts

07

Snorkel at dawn — marine life most active at first light

08

Bring reef-safe sunscreen — regular sunscreen damages coral

Practical Information

Everything You Need to Know

Getting There

Fly to Velana International Airport (Malé). Resorts provide speedboat transfers (30–90 mins) or seaplane transfers.

Overwater Bungalows

Direct lagoon access steps into the water. Best for snorkelling from the room. Ask for sunrise or sunset-facing rooms.

Diving

40+ metre visibility in many atolls. Whale sharks (year-round in South Ari Atoll), manta rays (Baa Atoll, May–Nov).

Food & Drink

Resorts offer all-inclusive packages (recommended). Alcohol only at resorts — not on local islands.

Budget Reality

Entry-level overwater bungalows $300–500/night. Luxury $1,000–5,000+. All-inclusive packages offer better value.

Important Notes

Alcohol only permitted at resort islands. Modest dress required on local islands. Climate change threatens existence.
