Japan Rail Pass covers all shinkansen bullet trains. Get IC card (Suica/Pasmo) for local transport. Taxis very expensive.

Remove shoes when entering homes and many temples. Never stick chopsticks upright in rice. Bow as greeting. Quiet on public transport.
Conveyor belt sushi, ramen in Fukuoka, kaiseki multi-course cuisine, wagyu beef, tempura, and convenience store food that's genuinely excellent.
