Japan's Ancient Capital — 2,000 Temples, Bamboo Groves & Tea Ceremony
About This Guide
Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years and remains the country's cultural heart — a city of extraordinary Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, Zen gardens, traditional machiya townhouses, and the living arts of geisha culture. With over 2,000 temples and shrines, Kyoto rewards repeated visits. Fushimi Inari's 10,000 torii gates and the Arashiyama bamboo grove are among Japan's most iconic images.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
The 10,000 vermillion torii gates climbing the sacred Mount Inari — Kyoto's most visited shrine. Go at 5am or after 7pm to experience it without crowds.
The bamboo grove (best at dawn), Tenryu-ji Zen garden, Nonomiya Shrine, the riverboat cormorant fishing, and the monkey park above the valley.
Kyoto's geisha district — traditional ochaya teahouses, the stone-paved Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka lanes, Kodai-ji temple, and the chance to spot a maiko or geiko in the early evening.
The Golden Pavilion reflected in its pond and Ryoan-ji's famous rock garden — 15 rocks arranged so one is always hidden. Two of Japan's most contemplated spaces.

Practical Information
Shinkansen from Tokyo (2h15) or Osaka (15 min). Stay near Kyoto Station or Gion for the best base. IC card (Suica/ICOCA) for all local transport.
Fushimi Inari at dawn, Arashiyama bamboo at 6am, Gion in the evening for geisha sightings, Kinkaku-ji in morning light, and Philosopher's Path in cherry blossom season.
Don't photograph geisha without permission — it's harassment. Stay on paths in temple gardens. Speak quietly in all temple compounds. Remove shoes when indicated.
Kaiseki (multi-course seasonal cuisine — the pinnacle of Japanese food), yudofu (tofu hot pot), matcha everything, Nishiki Market street food, and obanzai home-style cooking.
Most temples charge entry (¥500–1,000). Cumulative cost can be high. Kyoto City Bus 1-day pass (¥700) covers all major sights. Many shrines are free.
Kyoto is overwhelmingly crowded in cherry blossom (late March/April) and autumn colour (November). Book accommodation months ahead and visit popular sites at dawn.
