Aegean Pearl — Ephesus, Bodrum & Turkey's Most Beautiful Coast
About This Guide
İzmir is Turkey's third-largest city and its most liberal and cosmopolitan — a modern, European-feeling Aegean city with a vibrant café culture, the ancient agora beneath the city, and a beautiful waterfront (Kordon). It's the gateway to Ephesus, Pamukkale's white terraces, and the stunning Aegean coast stretching south to Bodrum and Marmaris.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
The best-preserved ancient Roman city in the Mediterranean — the Library of Celsus, the Odeon theatre, the marble-paved Curetes Street. Visited by St. Paul and the Virgin Mary.
Turkey's most glamorous resort town — the Crusader Castle of St. Peter houses a superb underwater archaeology museum. White-cube architecture, gulet sailing, and the Bodrum nightlife scene.
Extraordinary white travertine terraces and thermal pools (calcium carbonate formations). The adjacent Hierapolis Greco-Roman city adds exceptional archaeological depth.
The Kordon waterfront, the colourful Kemeraltı bazaar (far more authentic than Istanbul's Grand Bazaar), the ancient agora, and the most vibrant bar and café scene in Turkey.

Pamukkale: Stay overnight to see the terraces at sunrise — dramatic and nearly empty
Gulet sailing: Book through reputable İzmir or Bodrum agencies; avoid street touts
İzmir bazaar: Kemeraltı is far more authentic than Istanbul's Grand Bazaar
Pamukkale pools: Most are preserved — only walk on designated areas barefoot
Bodrum in August: Very crowded and expensive — May, June, or September better
Şirince village: 8 km from Ephesus, produces excellent fruit wines, beautiful village
House of the Virgin Mary: Near Ephesus, moving and quiet — far less visited than the main site
Practical Information
Fly to İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB). Bodrum has its own airport (BJV). Excellent bus network (Pamukkuk, Metro) connects all major towns at low cost.
Go at 8am when gates open — by 10am cruise ship groups arrive en masse. Hire a local guide (€15–20) — the history context is invaluable. Bring sun protection.
Blue Voyage (Mavi Yolculuk) — 4–7 day gulet sailing from Bodrum or Marmaris along the 'Turquoise Route.' One of the Mediterranean's greatest sailing experiences.
Aegean Turkish food is lighter than Istanbul's — olive oil dishes, fresh herbs, seafood, zeytinyağlı vegetables, meze, and the best midye dolma (stuffed mussels) in Turkey.
İzmir is significantly cheaper than Istanbul. Bodrum is more expensive in summer. Ephesus entry €15. Pamukkale €20. Turkey overall outstanding value for Western visitors.
Remove shoes before walking the terraces. Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light. The pools are restricted — most are preserved for viewing only.
