The Spice Island — Arabic Architecture, Turquoise Water & Swahili Culture
About This Guide
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania — a spice island with an extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage city (Stone Town), some of East Africa's finest beaches, and a cultural history that blends African, Arabic, Indian, and Portuguese influences into something entirely unique. The combination with a Tanzania mainland safari makes for one of Africa's greatest itineraries.
Inside the Guide
Every location is covered with practical tips, maps, and curated recommendations.
UNESCO World Heritage city of labyrinthine alleys, carved Arabic doors, mosques, the old slave market, and the house where Freddie Mercury was born.
The northern beaches with the finest swimming (tide doesn't expose rocks), stunning turquoise water, excellent snorkelling, and the best sunset bars.
The east coast's long sweeping beaches are known for kitesurfing — consistent Indian Ocean winds make Paje one of Africa's top kitesurfing destinations.
Guided spice plantation tours showing cloves, vanilla, cardamom, and nutmeg growing. Jozani Forest is the last refuge of the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey.

Insider Knowledge
Stone Town: Hire a local guide for the alleys — history context transforms the experience
Nungwi vs Paje: Nungwi for swimming, Paje for kitesurfing and a backpacker vibe
Tide chart: Essential for east coast beaches — swim at high tide only
Combine with Tanzania safari: 5 days safari + 5 days Zanzibar is the classic East Africa trip
Dress modestly in Stone Town — Zanzibar is Muslim and conservative in the city
Forodhani Gardens: Go at 7–8pm for the best night food market atmosphere
Mnemba Atoll snorkelling: Book through a reputable dive operator — sea turtle sightings near guaranteed
USD cash is widely preferred — small bills essential for guesthouses and local restaurants
Practical Information
Fly to Zanzibar (ZNZ) directly or via Dar es Salaam. Fast ferry from Dar es Salaam (2 hrs). Most visitors combine with a mainland Tanzania safari.
Get lost — the alleys have no logic, which is the point. Best in the evening when the heat subsides and the lights come on. Food stalls at Forodhani Gardens at night.
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim — dress modestly in Stone Town (cover shoulders and knees). No public alcohol. Ramadan affects restaurant hours.
Pilau rice, biryani, octopus curry, urojo (Zanzibar mix soup), Zanzibar pizza from street vendors, and the freshest tropical fruits including jackfruit and coconut.
Excellent value by East African standards. Budget guesthouses from $20. Beach bungalows $50–100. Top resorts $200–500. USD widely accepted.
East coast (Paje) beaches are affected by tides — swim at high tide only. North coast (Nungwi) is largely tide-independent — better for swimming.
